Warszawas were popular as taxis because of their sturdiness and ruggedness. However, due to their weight they were underpowered and had high fuel consumption. In total, 254,471 cars were made.

    Named after the city of Warsaw, the Warszawa car was until 1957 identical to the Soviet Pobeda, built under license, which was given to the Polish by GAZ, as Stalin’s present. The first major modernisation took place in 1957. The new model was called FSO Warszawa M20 model 57, but not so long after its name was changed to Warszawa 200. New model received a restyled front-end section. The powertrain was modified too, compression ratio was raised from 6.2:1 to 6.8:1.

    Since 1962 car could be equipped with the OHV I4 engine. It was much more modern than the archaic sidevalve construction used before. In 1964 the body style was changed to a Ponton, three-box design by then becoming mainstream in Europe, though the car retained a rather heavy style to western eyes.

    In 1967 it was announced that Perkins four cylinder 1.76-litre diesel engines would be fitted in export market Warszawas, which were scheduled to debut at the Poznań International Fair in June 1967.

    This first Polish car was produced in many version from a regular car to pickup. The car was designated almost for every purpose. Warszawas were used even in military and police units.

    First Warszawa top speed was 109 km/h. It was not the fastest car by then, but it wasn’t the slowest either. The Car had 2,2 liter engine which produces over 50 horse power. The engine consumed 11-13 liter of fuel per 100 kilometers  which was very high for an European standards. Despite of that the engine was still well received, mainly because it could run without problems even on very bad and low octain petrol – which was not that rare back in the days.

    Warszawa in overall was a really good car. Its popularity grew internationally and it started to be exported to Western Europe. Even Norway and Finland bought some of them (over 800 each country).

    A new project started in 2013 in order to restore the old car and revive it in a modern shape and design. New Warszawa is to be based on a BMW M5 E60 with a new V10 engine with a power of 507 hp. Th floor pan, suspension and power unit will come from BMW. Power, however, will be “tuned up” to about 600 hp.

    Although the car is based on BMW technology, all visible to the naked eye parts are designed from scratch. The quality of the car is put at such automotive celebrities as Bentley. New Warszawa is to be of sedan type.

    In 2014 a prototype of the new Warszawa is going to be ready to test ride. Low-volume production of about 3-4 vehicles per year is planned.”;s:2:”ht”;b:0;s:2:”st”;s:0:””;s:2:”co”;a:0:{}s:2:”cc”;b:0;s:2:”tg”;s:14:”Warsaw,Car,PRL”;s:2:”pg”;s:16:”warsaw-on-wheels”;s:2:”mf”;a:0:{}}}
